From luxurious beachfront properties to little family-run B&Bs in the heart of town, these 20 boutique hotels in Taormina offer the perfect stay for every type of budget. Browse through the key amenities and plan your perfect trip to Sicily’s most visited hotspot.

The little town of Taormina in Sicily – the little island at the southernmost point of Italy – has been attracting flocks of tourists since the 19th century. The main highlight for many is a trip to the third-century BC Greek amphitheater, which overlooks Mount Etna.

Most travelers choose to visit Taormina on a day trip from Catania, yet to truly get a feel of this little town I highly suggest spending at least one night. Taormina boutique hotels are a dime a dozen, yet not all of them are worth your pennies. Here are a few of my favorite, eco-conscious hotels.

My partner is from Palermo and as such we spend a lot of time in Sicily each year. As a travel writer and history buff, the island never ceases to amaze me! At first glance, the island is chaotic and a little rough around the edges but if you give it a little time, you will fall for its raw authenticity. Just like I did.

Where to Stay in Taormina

Historic center of Taormina

The town of Taormina is mostly pedestrianized and super picturesque. The main avenue of Corso Umberto I is lined with lively cafés, cafés, and fine dining restaurants. Just outside of the historic center lies the ancient Greek amphitheater. Inside the historical center, you can find a good mix of traditional Sicilian B&Bs (A’Coffa Bed and Breakfast) and beautifully converted grand hotels (Grand Hotel Timeo).

On Taormina’s coastline

Taormina’s coastline is a treasure trove of little bays and coves stretching out along the Ionian Sea. A cable car connects the Mazzarò inlet with the historical center, 2 kilometers away. Some of the best places to stay in Taormina have a private beach (Villa Sant’Andrea) or prime views of Isola Bella (Taormina Panoramic Hotel).

Hills surrounding Taormina

Taormina’s popularity means that many of the places to stay in Taormina come with a steep price tag. Moving away from the historical center and beachfront properties brings down the price considerably. If you are driving around Sicily, hotels slightly further out of Taormina have the added benefit of on-site parking. Many of the converted villas and B&Bs & have shuttles connecting the historical center and the beach (Villa Greta Hotel) to properties.

Must see villages in Sicily

Minimize Your Impact When Visiting Sicily

AVOID SINGLE USE PLASTIC: Water from the tap in Sicily is drinkable in most places. Make sure to pack a reusable water bottle for your trip.

DISCOVER THE VEGETARIAN CUISINE: There is a lot of vegetarian food in Italy. Although Sicily is very fish-based, they equally love their veggies. Aubergines and zucchini are a staple in the Sicilian diet.

STAYING A LITTLE LONGER: Although Taormina is often explored as a day trip from Palermo or a day trip from Catania it is worth spending a few days in the villages.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES: One of the top things to do in Palermo is to see the historical center in a horse-drawn carriage. There is no regulation to protect the horses and I have seen the poor animals collapse under the blistering summer heat. The horses are not treated humanely.

Good to Know Before Booking a Hotel in Taormina

Best time to visit Taormina

From late December to March, many of the hotels in Taormina are closed. The season starts beginning of April and ends middle of November. April, May and October are my favorite months on the island. They are considered low season, which is reflected in both the prices (oftentimes half) and the footfall.

How many days is enough in Taormina

Taormina is a bolthole and can be visited in one day. That being said, it is the most visited place in Sicily and it gets very busy with day trippers. If you are looking for a more relaxed trip, consider spending one night so you have the early morning to explore without the crowds.

Is staying in Taormina expensive?

The island of Sicily is a great budget destination. That is if you veer away from June, July, and August when all of Italy (and the rest of Europe) flock to the island in droves pushing up prices by sometimes 200%. Due to the limited availability of hotels in Taormina, hotels in the historical center and around Mazzaro Beach will rarely be less than €250 to €350 / night, unless you book many months in advance.

What is the White Lotus Hotel in Taormina?

The luxury San Domenico Palace Taormina (Fours Seasons Hotel).

Where to stay Catania or Taormina?

Most international flights will fly into Catania International Airport. The city is a great base to use when exploring Eastern Sicily. Due to its size, Catania has a lot more accommodations versus Taormina, which in turn pushes down the price per night significantly. A visit to Taormina is one of the most popular day trips from Catania.
