Vegetarian restaurants in Ljubljana
Slovenia has such a rich food culture, offering a wide variety of dishes . The cornerstone of the Slovenian cuisine is organic ingredients, many of them can be found in the various vegetarian restaurants in Ljubljana.
One of the oddest ingredients has got to be pumpkin oil (newsflash it’s really good) and the prolific use of honey, which I guess with 1 in 200 Slovenians being beekeepers is not hard to understand. Be sure to try out dishes with some of the traditional vegetarian ingredients from Slovenia.
Here is a list of spots I absolutely loved discovering for a bite to eat or something to drink.
1. Most buzzing spot – Open Kitchen (Friday only)
Or known locally as Odprta kuhna, is the place to be on Friday from early spring to late fall (weather permitting). You can find all sorts of goodies and innovative twists to traditional dishes. Yep, there are also vegetarian options!
Opening hours: Friday 08:00 – 22:00
Address: Pogačarjev trg, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
2. The Romantic Restaurant Serving Slovenian Food – Spajza
This spot is a little more off the beaten path e.g. not smack in the centre. Keep in mind Ljubljana is small, so it is only a 10-minute walk from Prešeren Square. The restaurant looks small from the outside, but it has a fantastic big garden in the back which is lit up at night and is a very romantic setting. The vegetarian options were limited, but the chef was very accommodating and made me a delicious salad, which was not on the menu.
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 12:00- 23:00; Sunday 12:00- 22:00
Address: Gornji trg 28, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
3. Hidden Gem: The Gallery Overlooking the Water- Bistro Niša
Now this is one of those rare hidden gems, in the middle of town. When you get to the main square, walk all the way to the end of the gallery and take the steps downstairs. Bistro Nisa is on the same level as the river and doubles as an art gallery, displaying local artists.
It is a fantastic spot to nibble on something small, have a glass of wine (or a coffee) and watch the world go by.
Opening hours: Monday – Thursday 08:00-20:00; Friday 08:00- 22:00; Saturday 07:00-17:00
Address: Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 5, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
4. Best Views of the City & Cocktails: The Nebotičnik Café
The best views of town are to be had either from the castle or the skyscraper. The advantage of the Nebotičnik Café is that it offers cocktails too. The cocktails are nothing fancy but the atmosphere is great, the sunsets are stunning, and if you are lucky, there is a good breeze to cool you down on a hot summers day.
Opening hours: Thursday- Saturday 09:00- 03:00; Sunday – Wednesday 09:00-01:00
Address: Štefanova ulica 1 1000 Ljubljana
5. Best Gelato With a View – Gelateria Romantica
I went to Ljubljana in summer; it was over 30° most days and was absolutely Gelato weather. For those of you that know me, I do not have a sweet tooth, and try and eat as healthy as possible. So it might seem a bit out of character to reference a Gelato place. But believe me, the gelato here is some of the best I have had. The multitude of flavours alone make it work coming in for a peek (pumpkin-oil gelato, matcha gelato,…). They also offer a mean Matcha latte for anyone looking for their fix. Take your gelato, sit outside and look at the beautiful view of the castle.
Opening hours (summer): Monday – Thursday 10:00-23:00; Friday-Saturday 10:00-24:00; Sunday 10:00-21:00
Address: Dvorni trg 1, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
6. Friendly Service & Slovenian Food with a Twist – Monstera Bistro
This cute bistro is owned by one of the best- known chefs of the country. They offer tasty Slovenian dishes that are a fusion of traditional and modern times. The food is made with seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The staff is exceptionally friendly and made a special effort to cater to my vegetarian needs.
Opening hours: Monday- Wednesday 11:30-17:00; Thursday-Saturday 11:30- 23:00
Address: Gosposka ulica 9, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
7. Breakfast for Kings – Bazilika Bistro
Between healthy breakfast options, indulgent cake, leafy salads or mouth-watering sandwiches, this place has something for everybody. The setting is very cozy and inviting. If you grab a seat by the window you can relax and watch the world go by. The owner is an absolute sweetheart and will make sure every whim is catered to.
Opening hours: Monday- Friday 07:00-20:00
Address: Prešernova cesta 15, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
